Dermatological Screening Days

Dermatological Screening Days

Skin tumours, such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or actinic keratoses represent the most widespread malignancies, both among women and men; in particular, according to the most recent data, melanoma is among the tumours with the highest incidence in Italy, and even young people must pay particular attention. Although the risk factors are well known, such as excessive sun exposure with sunburn, the presence of more than one hundred naevi, familiarity (i.e. the occurrence of melanomas among first-degree relatives), a personal history of melanoma or immunosuppression (e.g. people with organ transplants, haematological diseases or Parkinson's Mb.), it must be emphasised that in about half of the cases melanoma also affects people without any risk factors. If there are one or more risk factors it is advisable to undergo periodic dermatological examinations and, in general, a self-examination is above all fundamental, calling on the specialist or the general practitioner if one notices sudden changes in the size, colour, shape or thickness of one's naevi (ABCDE rule) or the onset of a new lesion on healthy skin, which is rapidly and constantly growing. In persons with more than 50 naevi a specialist examination is recommended if a lesion is noticed that differs from the remaining moles (also known as the 'ugly duckling' sign). Primary prevention, i.e. avoiding excessive exposure to the sun, and secondary prevention, i.e. screening and early diagnosis, are the most effective weapons for combating mortality and ensuring complete cure.

As in previous years, once again this year specialists from the Dermatology Clinic and STD Centres of ASUGI and the University of Trieste, in cooperation with Lega Italiana nella Lotta contro i Tumori (LILT) FVG, Trieste and Isontino, will be returning to the beaches of Trieste to offer free dermatological cancer screening examinations.

The screening campaign will be held on 8 and 9 June from 09:30 to 12:30 and from 14:30 to 16:30, as last year at the GIT beach in Grado, at the Velarium, thanks to the initiative of the President of the Consorzio Grado Turismo, Thomas Soyer and the President of the GIT, Roberto Marin.

The main entrance to the GIT beach (Viale Dante Alighieri 70) for those undergoing dermatological screening will be free of charge. There is no need to book, just turn up at the Velarium and wait your turn.

Given the presence of many Austrian and German tourists, Italian-German bilingualism will be guaranteed.

The campaign will take place under the patronage of ASUGI, the University of Trieste and in collaboration with LILT FVG, Trieste and Isontino.
