Friuli and its borders

Thanks to its privileged position Grado is the ideal starting point for interesting excursions during the day in the entire Region and towards the city just next to it: Venice.

Friuli was defined by Ippolito Nievo as a “compendium of the universe”, and it is a borderland, a mosaic of natural and cultural environments: Trieste’s Gulf and the Karst region, sandy beaches and the lagoon, wild mountains and adventurous rivers, flat expanses and the gentle Collio hills covered in vineyards. All of this topped by the typical Hapsburg and mitteleuropean feel of Gorizia and Trieste (during the summer Trieste can be reached from Grado by boat), with romantic, historical residential homes and castles overlooking the sea (like Miramare and Duino castles), with the charm of the three UNESCO cities (Aquileia, ancient Roman city; Palmanova, old star shaped fortress and Cividale, a major Lombard centre); and more, with Udine’s elegance, its old buildings in the iconic Venetian style. Last but not least the intriguing autarky city, Torviscosa, and the unforgettable itineraries of the Great War (World War I). Indeed, a crossroad for people, cultures and trades, in which all locations are not more distant than one-hour drive from the Island of the Sun.
