Cammini Aperti (Open Paths) is a project for the promotion of Italian paths under the banner of slowness, accessibility and sustainability.
An event designed to be open to everyone, walkers and non-walkers alike: free excursions to discover some of the most evocative itineraries of the Belpaese, together with the guides and managing bodies that take care of them.
A completely unique excursion in those places that saw the evangelist Mark preach for the first time: a ring of about 10 km on the prologue to the Cammino Celeste that will start from Aquileia to reach the lagoon of Grado and return, in the ancient city that for a time was also one of the capitals of the Roman Empire. Today, Aquileia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We will start from the Piazza Capitolo next to the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Aquileia to reach the Alpe Adria cycle-pedestrian path in the direction of Grado along what was once the Via Flavia.
The Island of Barbana is the starting point of the Prologue of the Cammino Celeste and is home to a very ancient Marian shrine in the Monastery of Santa Maria di Barbana run by Benedictine monks.
Returning towards the pine forest we will visit the lovely Church of San Marco before resuming the return route and if possible, depending on the weather conditions, we will reach the mouth of the Natissa river via the embankment and then return to Aquileia via a dirt road.
