Contrazioni pericolose (Dangerous Contractions) is a show that marks a turning point in Gabriele Pignotta's career, both as an actor and as an author. All the winning ingredients are there: comical situations, moments of confrontation and encounter that make you think, great chemistry between the actors on stage and a touch of mystery that never hurts.
Contrazioni pericolose, however, is not a simple comedy, like so many we have seen in recent years, and unlike Pignotta's previous works, it goes one step further. It is an important step that crosses the threshold of exploring the soul, the impulses, fears, hopes and desires of a generation that wants to find its balance in the chaos of a life that has lost its certain points of reference.
Massimo Martina (Giorgio Lupano) and Martina Massimo (Rocío Muñoz Morales) have been friends for years. Their meeting was fortuitous, dictated by the strange coincidence of their first names matching each other's surnames, but from that moment on, something blossomed between them. What seems like a simple friendship, a friendship that could hide a volcano, is however tempered by the fears of a life that struggles to provide the concrete foundation capable of giving the human soul the strength to make major changes to the status quo. But it will be precisely a change that will disrupt their lives: Martina will become pregnant and Massimo will only find out when she goes into labour.
This is the right moment for the eruption of the volcano of emotions that the two have been carrying inside them for years. In a delivery room where the play of light skilfully reflects the pain and encounters between the two protagonists, the obstetrician Francesco (Gabriele Pignotta) plays a fundamental role. The latter well represents the resigned passion of those who work and experience situations of extreme joy and pain in Roman hospitals, which year after year are increasingly struggling due to staff shortages and limited resources.
Contractions, as described by Pignotta, are a good comparison to the internal struggles that not only the forty-something generation finds itself experiencing on a daily basis. A comedy that makes you laugh a lot, feel a lot, but also reflect on our limitations, burdens and fragility, inviting us to face life with greater effort... who knows, maybe then the contractions will pass too!
