The Museum of Fishing and Lagoon Life was established with the aim of preserving and recounting the history of the ‘casonera’ community, a group of people who for centuries lived in the characteristic ‘casoni’ (fishermen’s huts) of the Grado lagoon. This was a unique way of life, deeply rooted in the local area and its natural rhythms, which over time developed its own customs, traditions and knowledge, remaining virtually unchanged until after the Second World War. It was precisely the isolation of the lagoon that helped to preserve this culture, passed down from generation to generation mainly through oral tradition.

Today, the museum stands as a true repository of memory, established to safeguard a historical and anthropological heritage of great value that was in danger of being lost. The exhibition features original objects from the lagoon’s casoni, preserved over time by the casoneri and their descendants: fishing tools, items of daily life and evidence of traditional building techniques.

The exhibition is organised thematically and narratively, guiding visitors on a journey of discovery not only of the objects but of the entire lagoon world, with its delicate balance, its customs and its deep connection with the environment.

Alongside the material artefacts, there are also important intangible testimonies, such as video interviews with the last remaining casoneri, who recount first-hand the life, traditions and values of a community that has now disappeared, yet remains alive in the memory of the local area.

Entry to the museum is free.
