From the Director’s Notes:

Staging The Imaginary Invalid today – one of Molière’s funniest and most topical plays – is a marvellous challenge. Re-reading the text of one of the few authors who were also actors brings the author’s comic and critical intent to life right from the table readings. What can one of the most frequently performed plays still tell us today? Certainly that Argan, the protagonist, is still amongst us. Along with his band of wives, children, maids, brothers and doctors. The theme of medicine, the controversies it generates, and the passions it unleashes are still the subject of public debate today, just as they always have been. Amongst professionals and, above all, amongst those who are genuinely ill and those who are feigning illness. From the very first lines, Molière takes the audience by the hand and lulls them with the laughter provoked by the characters in this comedy, only to then leave us to reflect on our relationship with doctors and their prescriptions. We wanted to return the text to its roots, striving wholeheartedly to recapture the spirit that animated Molière and his troupe, not only at the time of its creation but also, and above all, in its staging. So that a timeless text may speak to, make laugh and provoke reflection in today’s audience. A wonderful adventure, made possible only thanks to a marvellous company that has taken to the stage with love and passion, and which finds in Angelo Tosto its perfect comic leader. Angelo was born to be Argan.
