2026/2027 Theatre Season: Argo

Argo, by Letizia Russo, loosely based on the book by Maria Grazia Ciani, tells the story of Vera, aged 85, her daughter Beatrice, aged 55, and Beatrice’s thirty-year-old daughter Clara, who will be played by Ariella Reggio, Maria Ariis and Lucia Limonta. Vera has Alzheimer’s, and her daughter decides to take her one last time to Pula, from where she fled when she was just a child: a ‘break’ she has never spoken of since.

In "Storia di Argo", Maria Grazia Ciani recounts her escape from Istria after the end of the Second World War. It thus tackles an extremely sensitive historical subject. The rupture, the forced abandonment, are depicted here through the separation of the little girl from her dog, York. York, like Argo, the dog of Ulysses. Ciani does not adopt a historical or novelistic approach; hers is a journey through inner landscapes, allusions and metaphors, without ever falling into sterile polemics or essayistic documentation. ‘Storia di Argo’ has the breath of poetry.

‘I realised I couldn’t stage such an intimate book, let alone simply adapt it,’ explains director Serena Sinigaglia. ‘I needed an author who, drawing inspiration from the book’s gentle and ethereal tone, would write an original script reflecting the perspective of someone who, like me, has experienced that story from a distance. I wanted the play to be set in the present day and to present a comparison between three generations of women. And that is how Argo came about.’ ‘The play,’ concludes the director, ‘delicately attempts to tackle a very important – and I would say almost sensitive – theme: that of the “burden of memory”.’
