On 6 December 2025, the new Grado Civic Treasury Museum was inaugurated, a major exhibition space dedicated to the island’s religious and cultural history. Housed in the former parish building and named after Monsignor Sebastiano “Bastian” Tognon – the parish priest who, during the First World War, had the courage to save the Basilica’s precious treasure by hiding it in a carpenter’s house – the museum aims to pay tribute to a figure of fundamental importance to Grado’s history.

The new museum exhibition permanently houses ancient liturgical furnishings, reliquaries, vestments and sacred objects linked to the history of the Basilica and the thousand-year-old Patriarchate of Grado, a living testimony to Grado’s deep ties with the Byzantine-Adriatic region. Alongside the “treasure”, statues, historical artefacts and works from the local ecclesiastical heritage are also on display, offering visitors a comprehensive and fascinating account of the island’s spiritual tradition.
