There was a time when our country – and much of the world – seemed happy. It was around 1958, the years immediately before and after the start of the economic boom. People were – or seemed – happy, their eyes full of hope for the future. And if there is one man who embodies all this in his body, if there is one who, with his voice and the vitality that inhabited his every step, fully represents those years, that man is Domenico Modugno.

With a single song, he made the entire Western world happy to exist. Yet he knew he was working on the ephemeral, the intangible, but despite everything, he stubbornly believed in it: “I want to sing about happiness. Even if it doesn't exist, I want to delude myself that it does, I have to believe that it exists”. And he does so with obstinacy, with inner torment, but to the very end.

Nel blu is the intimate story of a man from a land forgotten by God - Puglia, which would remain on the periphery of the kingdom for decades to come, at least until I too left it to seek an artistic life elsewhere - who sets off on an adventure to “become an actor” and finds himself, after a few years, teaching the whole world to “fly”: he opens his mouth and sweeps away every dark remnant of the post-war period with an irrepressible cry.
