Josef Maria Auchentaller and Grado. Vienna and the Adriatic Riviera. An artist at the height of his success, who in the early 1900s left the Habsburg capital to live in a fishing village on the southern borders of the Empire, where he finally discovered the "beauty of painting alone".
A predetermined destiny? Or just chance or the aspirations of his wife Emma, or the desire to escape the rigid artistic impositions and the 'gilded' world of the Viennese Secession? The catalogue presents a selection of his splendid Gradese works, magically suspended 'between sea and sky' and investigates, in accompanying essays and through precious period snapshots, the fate of a family and the birth of tourism on the 'Island of the Sun'.
