Grado during the Christmas period is very popular with those who want to experience the holidays in a unique atmosphere! The Island of the Sun is wonderful in itself: it has a large pedestrianised centre, a historic centre with many shops, bars and restaurants, and a characteristic and romantic Y-shaped harbour. During the Christmas period, however, the small fishing village is transformed into the Island of Christmas, thanks to the lights, the atmosphere and the numerous events organised by the municipality every year.
The most eagerly awaited event is undoubtedly the Nativity Scene Exhibition. Over 150 interpretations of the Nativity, from December to January, can be seen at the Regional Congress Centre, among the streets and squares of the historic centre and along the streets of Fossalon and Boscat. There are also many events, music and entertainment with various shows organised by the municipal administration, the Grado Tourism Consortium and numerous local associations, all with a Christmas theme.
Finally, there is a very characteristic event at the Mandracchio port: every year, on 5 January, the terrifying Varvuole (or sea witches) arrive at the port to ward off negativity and contribute, with their strength and energy, to kick-starting the new year with a burst of positivity.
Since 2025, Christmas in Grado has also been enriched with important cultural and wellness-related innovations. During the festive period, it is possible to visit three museums, discovering the history and identity of the island: the Museum of Fishing and Lagoon Civilisation, which offers free guided tours on certain days; the Civic Museum of the Treasure of Grado and the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology of the Upper Adriatic.
For wellness enthusiasts, the thermal pool, fitness area, wellness area and beauty SPA at the Terme Marine Grado offer further opportunities to enjoy moments of relaxation and regeneration, even during the Christmas holidays.
