A holiday in Grado is also an opportunity to explore the nearby Isonzo region through its wines. A visit to a winery – to be arranged with the producers – allows you to discover the history of the estates, the work carried out amongst the vines, and the different interpretations of local and international grape varieties. An experience to be continued at the table, exploring the pairings between the wines of the Friuli Isonzo DOC and Grado’s seafood cuisine, from fish starters to first courses and grilled dishes.

The area Friuli - Isonzo is a band of low-lying land, extending south of the hilly area between Carso and Friuli - Aquileia. Here, even the vine cultivated on the plain and watered by the River Isonzo produces an excellent, popular wine, which has been easily sold since ancient times. The Eneti, the first people already living on these lands many centuries before Christ, were mainly dedicated to agriculture and imported the vine from Greece.

The autochthonous wines produced are: Friulano and Verduzzo friulano, Malvasia and Refosco dal peduncolo rosso. They also cultivate:  Chardonnay, all Pinot and Cabernet, Italian and Rheine Riesling, Sauvignon, the aromatic Traminer, Merlot and Franconia.

The indigenous wines produced are: Friulano and Verduzzo friulano, Malvasia and Refosco dal peduncolo rosso. The following are also grown: Chardonnay, all the Pinot and Cabernet varieties, Riesling italico and Riesling renano, Sauvignon, Traminer aromatico, Merlot and Franconia.

All the wines have a moderate acidity; the colour of the white wines is generally an intense straw yellow, and the aromas are floral and fruity. The red wines tend towards a ruby colour, with violet hues in the younger wines. The aromas are fruity and intense, typical of the base grape varieties, which in more mature wines give way to spicy or phenolic notes associated with oak. On the palate, the white wines are more structured than average, with good balance, complex aromatic nuances and a natural tendency to evolve over time. The red wines are fresh and fruity, capable of achieving greater complexity when produced with ambitious winemaking objectives. The common characteristic of Friuli Isonzo or Isonzo del Friuli DOC wines is their full fruitiness, the richness of their aromas and a perfect balance on the palate.
