MOSTRE E CONVEGNI
Heraldic exhibition: "The Painted Sails of Grado"
2 October 2024
Position: Vetrine del Cinema Cristallo, Grado
Sails hoisted like flags colored the embankment and port of Grado at the beginning of the 20th century, banners calling for protection, like prayers with Christian or mythological symbolism. A tradition that dates back to ancient times, where figures such as the circle, the inverted triangle and the Solomon’s knot were believed to have magical powers. Each sail had its own emblem to identify the owner, often representing the owner’s nickname and ancestry. The sails, painted over time, brought to life a real fishing heraldry documenting the ancient fishing families. The sails were paited with earth colors diluted in sea water together with flour or pine resin, which served as glue. The colors obtained were limited to the red and yellow color palette. Before painting the sail, the symbol was drawn with chaarcoal on the cloth, then the colors were applied with a sponge soaked in color.
